Facility managers have to be on constant lookout for outbreaks of contagious diseases, due to their potential to affect the workplace. One of the latest outbreaks to hit the news is that of norovirus illnesses. The norovirus was the cause of an outbreak of gastrointestinal illnesses last week at East Marion Elmentary School in Silver Springs, FL. Nearly 300 students were out sick last week, and facility managers at the school are still scrambling to deal with the issue. Meanwhile, more than 40% of students in New Jersey’s Eagleswood Elementary School were out sick on Thursday, prompting officials to close the school temporarily and send in cleaning crews. The norovirus is most prevalent in the winter, but it appears that it is surfacing earlier than usual this year.
The virus is spread largely through contact with other people, food and drink, and contact with contaminated surfaces. It spreads rapidly through daycare centers, nursing homes, schools, and cruise ships. One of the most effective ways to combat the norovirus is consistent hand washing and cleaning surfaces that are constantly exposed to human contact. Facilities staff should be routinely cleaning these surfaces with EPA-approved products that include a label claim for norovirus.
